Fast forward to September 2024’s IAA Commercial Vehicles Expo, and MAN once again set a new benchmark with its all-new D30 engine—also known as the PowerLion platform core. State-of-the-Art Production
Manufactured at MAN’s historic Nuremberg facility—which celebrated over 100 years of diesel-engine expertise—the D30 engine production benefitted from a €220 million investment. An additional €30 million bolstered the crankshaft line at the Salzgitter plant. With an annual output target of 50,000 units, this PowerLion diesel engine stands ready to power TGX and TGS 40-ton tractor units across Europe and beyond.
Six Power Levels, Over 50% Thermal Efficiency
The D30 engine offers six power ratings—from 380 hp to 560 hp (torque 2,100 Nm–2,800 Nm)—and achieves a thermal efficiency above 50%. Compared with the previous D26 and D15 series, the new D30 yields up to 5% fuel savings and a proportional CO₂ reduction when paired with the PowerLion driveline and aerodynamic chassis enhancements. This translates into tangible operating-cost advantages for fleet operators.

XPI High-Pressure Injection & Fuel Economy
At the heart of its performance is the XPI high-pressure injection system delivering up to 1,800 bar fuel pressure through new 10-hole injectors. The superior atomization optimizes combustion and transient response, producing the much-desired “low-rev, high-torque” characteristic. This precision injection, paired with predictive ECU mapping, ensures best-in-class fuel efficiency.
Dual SCR Injection for Clean Emissions
To meet Euro 6 standards without an EGR system, the D30 deploys Dual SCR technology: two-stage AdBlue dosing uses residual exhaust heat for superior urea atomization and catalyst activation. This approach minimizes NOₓ emissions while maintaining ultralow particulates—ensuring that the D30 engine delivers both power and environmental responsibility.

Reliable Braking with Optional CRB & Retarder
For downhill control, operators can specify the CRB (compression release brake) system—providing up to 355 kW (483 hp) braking power—or choose the new Retarder 47 hydraulic retarder rated at 4,700 Nm torque. Both options significantly reduce service-brake wear, enhancing safety in mountainous or heavy-load scenarios.
TipMatic 14 Gearbox & SmartShifting
Matching the D30’s muscle is the TipMatic 14 automated transmission, offering 12 forward gears plus crawler and overdrive. At 60 kg lighter than its predecessor, it integrates SmartShifting, EfficientCruise GPS cruise control, and PredictiveDrive for seamless gear changes and minimal torque interruption—maximizing uptime and driver comfort.
